Penalty cards like red and yellow are used by Referees to signify when a player has committed an offense. The official will raise the card over their head and look or point at the player who committed the offense. This action communicates the decision to all players, spectators, and other officials in a language-neutral manner. The nature or seriousness of the offense, as well as the level of punishment to be applied, are indicated by the color of the card used by the official.
A player who receives a red card is expelled from the game and the playing area immediately and for the duration of the game, the red-carded team will be short-handed.
